Unique... Just like like everyone else.

My name is Imani. This is where I post my thoughts, ideas, and inspirations. I'm currently studying Archi(torture) at BGSU. Since being in college, I have also been very curious about other subjects (which you will see). When you read, just remember one thing: I'm still learning. My more laid-back, less-serious blog is this one: http://ohheyimani.tumblr.com

  3. This blog has started off as something for a class, but it is now a blog where I’m actually going to express my feelings on everything, with as little limits as possible (something I’m working on)

  4. Venting.

Sometimes I get in these moods where I look up all this stuff about racism and how it affects our society today. It’s not just racism that bothers me. What bothers & angers me more is that people try to pretend it doesn’t exist anymore. And if they know it exists, they hope MORE that you shut up about it than hope that racism goes away.

Where I was raised basically up until I graduated from high school, I never FELT black (as in, I KNEW I was black, but I never felt that I was being discriminated against because of the color of my skin). Not that I thought I lived in some sort of Utopia, but I for sure had a lot bigger problems than being stereotyped which would keep me down. Of course I knew that racism existed, but until I got to college, I never knew how hurtful it can be. No one truly hears me speak out about this because I really do like to avoid confrontation with both white people and black people so if you know me personally, you can take this as you may.

I got into this argument with one of my friends on Facebook. Should I mention that he is one of my ONLY white friends at my college who has NEVER said anything racist to me? Sorry if you’re reading this and you feel offended that you in fact HAVE said something racist, whether you “weren’t trying to be racist or not”. But actually, I’m not sorry. I’m not the one who should be apologizing for YOUR racist comments. I’m someone who really won’t take it personally; I’ll just blame it simply on the area in which you were raised, and weren’t exposed to black people. ANYWAY as I was saying, I was in this argument on Facebook because he stated that black groups such as the NAACP “shouldn’t exist” because it’s just “further utilizing racism.” What he doesn’t understand is that groups like this are designed simply for helping those who have been IGNORED so much in the past. He doesn’t understand that it’s his White Privilege that is denying him from even understanding! Another guy that was defending him was saying that there is something called “MINORITY PRIVILEGE” because minorities “expect” to get “special treatment.” If this isn’t twisted, I don’t know what possibly is! Then this guy also stated that when it comes to minorities having high jail & poverty rates, “they could avoid that if they wanted to.” That’s where I stopped responding because he’s just flat out ignorant. I wasn’t going to apologize for groups that exist to help minorities and black people because of something that white people brought along! White people usually want to be like “Oh, well I’m not like that.” Okay, you’re not, I believe you. But you can’t deny that oppression from all those years in history doesn’t have an effect of people of color today.

Now, I come from several minorities. I’m black, female, and Muslim. For each one, I have been discriminated against, of course. The female aspect is of course not something that should be ignored, but the black and Muslim aspects are what I receive the most discrimination from. Obviously I don’t HAVE to tell people that I am Muslim, I choose to, because usually they will assume that I am Christian. That’s what everyone does. I can’t count how many times people are like “you don’t even act black!” or “you’re really white on the inside!” This is something that hurts because I know that from the start you have assumed that I am going to be inarticulate, have an attitude, and basically be dumb from my skin color. With the Muslim thing, I know that I do not share the same problem as an Arab who MAY OR MAY NOT EVEN BE MUSLIM where people assume that they hate America or want to blow up a plane. (THIS IS OFF TOPIC BUT PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THERE IS NOT A HARD “A” IN ARAB, THIS IS NOT “SOULJA BOY & A-RAB SO STFU) However, people always ask the most stupid questions and say the stupidest things. These are some of the things I have heard:

    - “She’s not black, she’s Muslim.” ISLAM is a religion, or way of life. That would be the same as saying, “She’s not white, she’s Christian.” Makes no sense, right?

    - “Dang you can’t even have bacon though?!” Obviously ignorance. I’ve never had pork in my life and I do not intend on eating it. I do NOT feel like I am missing out, so stop asking me.

    - I’ve had a guy ask me, “So where’s Allah?” …pronouncing it all wrong and asking only to be rude and hurtful.

-I’ve even had one of my best friends tell me that I am going to Hell because of my religion. Flat out said it. Is that the Christian thing to do, to not be accepting of others? I know it’s not the Muslim thing to do… so which one is REALLY teaching good morals?

There are several other things that I can’t think of at this time, but I hope you see my point. When I discuss racism with my black friends, most of them just don’t want to talk about it. But it’s something that IS alive and real in this society. It’s not just one individual’s fault; it’s society’s fault as a whole. I just needed to rant about my own personal experiences. There’s so much more I could say but I’ll leave it here for now. Whoever reads this, don’t misinterpret my frustrations for racism. And don’t try to belittle the problems that people face everyday, such as racism and other kinds of discrimination. Just don’t. If you do, read it over again.

Artist Duncan Wilson was inspired to create walls of colorful post it notes that resemble pixels.

What I admire about this is that on the surface, the wall just looks like a normal wall with a pixel design, but there is still a lot more to it. It’s something that is so simple but very cool to use.

  6. Idea from CreativityPool.com: Closed Captioning On Back of Chair in Movie Theater

Description: Deaf People or Hard of Hearing People would like to be able to go to movies in movie theatres, but can’t because the movie doesn’t have closed captioning or can’t understand what’s going on in the movie. So I came up with an idea of maybe having the closed captioning on the back of the movie chair, so it doesn’t bother the hearing people. Or if we came up with glasses like 3D glasses that have closed captioning in them, so it doesn’t bother the hearing people. Deaf/Hard of Hearing people need to be able to go into movie theatres and watch movies like anybody else would. I know this because I am Hard of Hearing myself.

I believe that this is a great idea and I’m not sure why it hasn’t already been used in movie theaters. There are so many things that we see every day to help out those who are deaf, blind or handicapped. Why not make things easier for these people to enjoy entertainment as well? I think that if movie theaters have something like a screen on the back of a few chairs with closed captioning, more deaf and hard of hearing people will be able to enjoy the whole movie theater experience.

  7. Idea from CreativityPool.com: Waiter Call Button

Description: In a busy restaurant, we always have trouble getting a hold of a waiter. All tables should have a call button, like you would find on an airplane. This would make life easy for both the client and the waiter.

I think that this is a good idea for an invention because I’m sure everyone has experienced the problem of trying to get a waiter’s attention. I believe that if such a thing is invented, restaurants will want to buy these in order to have better service for their customers so that their restaurant will have a good reputation. I think that it would get more and more popular and eventually several restaurant chains would be using it since it would probably create an increase of profit for restaurants.

“Moses Bridge” by Ro&Ad Architects

This piece of landscape architecture appeals to me because it fits the environment more than a bridge would. The structure just fits in with the landscape rather than cutting through it or being too distracting. It catches your attention but it also gets you to see the surroundings, which I think would be difficult to do as a landscape architect. Creating a design that fits with its environment seems like it would be a real challenge but the outcome is so much more pleasing than normal structures that you see every day.

I think these colors are just absolutely beautiful together. It just looks so natural and the color scheme is really nice as well so it’s a good idea for something that I may want to design one day.
